A solid state drive doesn't have moving parts and has up to four times faster read speeds, but it costs a lot more per gigabyte. Prices have come down a lot in recent years, with even mega-capacity models tipping the scales at 5TB but costing just over $100. Thanks to speedier USB-C and USB 3.0 (as well as 3.1/3.2) interfaces, a traditional hard drive that uses "old" hard drive technology (mechanical platters and a moving read-write head to access data) works just fine for most people. Both scenarios can be improved with an external drive. Game consoles such as the PS4 and Xbox One include drives that max out at 1-terabyte (which is roughly 1,000GB), and those fill up quickly if you're not disciplined about removing games as you acquire more. Unless you're springing for a high-end computer, most new models don't come with much storage - usually, it's 256 or perhaps 512 gigabyes.
